'The audience are'. This is because an audience is a group of people, meaning it is plural. You use 'are' in plural cases, and 'is' in singular ones.

@nehaber1 Thanks, but I checked some links and 'the + something' seems to be regarded as a singular because it talks about a group.
'The poor is'

Some words, like audience, have ambiguous plurality.
The audience is both singular and plural.
For example, we would say:
"The audience are all eating ice cream."
This is because we a referring to the individuals. They are not all eating one ice cream, they each have an ice cream. On the other hand would say:
"The audience is very large."
This is because the audience as a whole is large. We don't mean that all the individuals are fat.
So, it can be either.

@acb123 Your first link has some right and wrong answers. The answer in the second link is correct. These mass nouns can be either singular or plural (see my example).

@acb123: Sorry about that! I was talking generally. In most cases when you are talking about an audience you would use 'are', but as @Igirisujin: said, in some cases you would also use 'is'. It just depends on the circumstances!

@Igirisujin Thank you for the detailed explanation. I understand. I think 'the public' and 'the poor' are larger groups than the group of 'audience', so it seems you can choose either depends on what to describe about the group. :)

I noticed something. 'The audience is' describes about the people's status whereas 'the audience are' describes about the action the people would take.
Is so, I can say 'the poor have been planning for revolution' or 'the public stay away from criticizing the politicians', can't I? It talks about people's action.

@acb123 You just need to be aware of the meaning. It can be either.
But in some cases even English people are confused. So don't worry about too much. : )
