くれる focues on the person doing a favor. もらう focues on the fact one receives a favor from someone.
Say, your coworker and you are talking about someone nice in your office.
Coworker: What do you think about X?
You: He's really nice. He always give me a hand and help me out (彼は私を手伝ってくれる).
Coworker: Same goes for me. One time, he gave me a ride home (私は彼に家に送ってもらった*ことがある) even though he lives in the opposite side of the city.
*もらった: the past form of もらう

@DontEatSakamoto Thanks a lot for the answer. Sounds like there might be a lot of cases where it might me ambigious whether to use くれる or もらう、 right?

@CVoss To me it's very clear which one to use in which situation. haha. Pelnty of experience to the language might aid for better understanding.
I don't know, but I guess, Japanese is one of the languages where one goes back and forth between themseleves and someone else, and sees things from the different perspectives. This might be a cause of the confusions that Japanese lerners experience regarding this matter.

@DontEatSakamoto Let's try to use two example:
1. My last birthday was so great. All of my friends gave me great presents.
2. My friends are all pretty great. All of them gave me great presents on my last birthday.
I would surmise that in the first case I would use もらう, while in the second くれる would be appropriate. Is that correct?

@CVoss Well, this is another topic regarding the stand alone use of eachくれる and もらう as in meaning 'gift/present'. Literally put, X gives me something for くれる and I am given something by X. But, basically, both くれる and もらう are translated into the exact same way: X gives me something.
くれる is usually used in the case that you focus on the fact someone gives you something and the person giving is someone that equals or inferior to you in social context. With くれる, you constract a sentence this way: Subject が (私に)Object を くれる. On the other hand, もらう is where one shows more of their gratitude for receiving something from someone. The sentence structure with もらう is as follows: (私は)Subject から/に Objectをもらう.
